NPSP keeps rate increase to record low of 0.93 percent

04/07/2018

Norwood Payneham and St Peters Council has kept the 2018-2019 average residential rate increase just 0.93 percent following the adoption of it’s 2018-2019 Annual Business Plan & Budget adopted on 2 July 2018.

This equates to an increase of $14 per annum, based on a home with an average capital value of $661,658.

Commercial property owners will again experience some rate relief, with the average rate decreasing by 1.05 percent.

This equates to cutting $26 from the rates bill for an average Commercial property.

"Achieving this record low increase demonstrates that the Council continues to have the City's finances under control and maintaining financial sustainability," said Mayor Bria.

Mayor Bria said that over the course of this current 4 year term of the Council, the average annual rate increase has been 1.7 percent.

This compares favourably to the average annual increase of State Government fees such as the Natural Resources Management Levy (8.1 percent) and the Solid Waste Levy (11.5 percent) during the same period.

Through its budgeting process, the Council has projected an Operating Surplus of $1.430 million, which will be used to repay loan borrowings taken out to fund major capital works and projects.

“The combination of low rate increases, operating surpluses and falling debt over the past few years has placed the Council in a strong financial position to meet any unexpected challenges over the medium term.” Mayor Bria said

This year the Council will invest $11.8 million into new projects, as well as nearly $7 million into its Capital Works Program.

This includes storm water drainage ($4.1 million), road reseals ($1.528 million), footpaths ($0.811 million), and kerbing and water tables ($0.765 million).
