Message from Mayor Bria on International Volunteer Day

05/12/2022

On behalf of the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters, I would like to thank every Volunteer wherever they may live on International Volunteer Day.

Every day across the world, hundreds of millions of people are generously giving their skills, knowledge and time, in causes large and small, seeking neither recognition or reward.

Whether it be providing assistance during natural disasters, delivering a meal, fundraising for a sporting club or organising a church fete, Volunteers are the ‘glue’ that holds communities together.

The difference Volunteers make to the lives of others is practical and tangible.

There are about 200 Volunteers who work tirelessly in a range of roles in our City and I would like to also acknowledge and thank each of you  for helping to make our community a better place to live, work and visit.

On this International Volunteer Day, let’s not only thank our Volunteers but consider becoming one yourself.

By joining the ranks of those who selflessly serve in different ways - but all with a view to make the life of others in need worth living - we too can find that the gift of receiving is truly in the giving.

Perhaps Robert F. Kennedy summed it up best when he said: ”The purpose of life is to contribute in some way to make things better.”

It is because of Volunteers that today is a better day than yesterday, and tomorrow will be better still.

The names of Volunteers may not be in the history books, but their selfless deeds will forever have a place on the hearts and minds of the people they serve.

My sincere thanks and best wishes to every Volunteer.
