Third Creek Drainage Upgrade Project – Stage 1

The City’s stormwater drainage network is one of many infrastructure assets which is provided and maintained by the Council for the community.

From September 2019 to August 2020, Stage 1 of the Third Creek Stormwater Upgrade Project transformed the site around the former Schweppes factory at Ashbrook Avenue and Lewis Road in Payneham.

Cost: $2.5 million

The Third Creek drainage Upgrade Project forms part of a $38.4 million program to upgrade the City’s stormwater drainage network over the next 15 years.

The program will benefit the community by:

  • addressing and reducing the impacts of flooding
  • helping to protect residents, their homes and property
  • protecting the City’s assets such as footpaths, kerbing and street trees.


Background

The City’s stormwater drainage network is one of many infrastructure assets which is provided and maintained by the Council for the community. The network removes surface water from roadways and provides appropriate levels of flood protection throughout the City.

The City-wide upgrades to the stormwater drainage network follows a floodplain mapping project which identified locations at risk of flooding and considers a range of future scenarios that could influence this including infill development and expected climate change.

Project details

The Third Creek Drainage Upgrade Project will increase the capacity of Third Creek from Bridge Road to Payneham Road, Payneham, which also includes the former Schweppes site at 382 Payneham Road, Payneham.

The Third Creek Drainage Upgrade Project is funded by the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters.

Works for this project include:

  • construction of 145 metres of 3600 x 1800 reinforced box culverts
  • construction of 35 metres of 4800 x 1350 reinforced box culverts
  • upgrade of approximately 112 metres of existing stormwater infrastructure along Lewis Road to the West of Ashbrook Avenue
  • upgrade of approximately 55 metres of existing stormwater infrastructure along Lewis Road to the East of Ashbrook Avenue
  • relocation of approximately 110 metres of SA Water mains water service
  • relocation of approximately 103 metres of SA Water sewer main.
