Mayor renews call for DIT to install pedestrian crossing on Magill Road, Trinity Gardens

23/09/2021

Norwood Payneham & St Peters Mayor Robert Bria has renewed his Council’s call for the Department for Infrastructure and Transport to install a pedestrian crossing in the vicinity of McDonalds, Trinity Gardens.

May Bria, who first wrote to former Road Safety Minister Corey Wingard about a pedestrian crossing in December 2019, said the risk to pedestrian safety in this section of Magill Road “can no longer be ignored”.

“We have a situation where the traffic build-up, particularly during morning peak times, is so intense that it is almost impossible to cross the road,” Mayor Bria said.

“Further east along Magill Road at St Morris, there are two pedestrian crossings barely 120 metres apart, but then there’s no safe access point travelling west until the Portrush Road and  Magill Road intersection. This needs to be addressed as a matter of priority.

“I am often approached by Trinity Gardens’ residents who want to be able to cross Magill Road safely. I suspect many Beulah Park (located in the City of Burnside) residents share the same sentiment,” he said.

Mayor Bria said that the current widening of Portrush Road to allow more vehicle movements will only make the intersection and the traffic build-up in the approach to the intersection busier.

“We can’t just have a situation where DIT only considers the interests of motorists on Magill Road at the expense of pedestrians and cyclists,” he said.

Mayor Bria said he has written to Minister Wingard in the hope the Council receives a more positive response than he did two years ago, when the Council was advised that there was no plan to install a pedestrian crossing at the location.
