Between Two Worlds - celebrating and exploring our Kaurna history.

Join us in celebrating our City’s unique cultural heritage as part of this year’s South Australia's History Festival 2021.

‘Between Two Worlds’ explores our Kaurna history through a series of tours and talks, special film screening and exhibition.

South Australia’s History Festival will run from 1 to 31 May.

The City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters is located within the traditional Country of the Kaurna. Karrawirra Pari and the old creeks cross the landscape shaping ancient songlines and beliefs. Recollections and stories contribute to a new understanding of Kaurna culture.

‘Lalai Dreamtime’: an important Australian film by Michael Edols, 1972

This rare film documents the return by the Worrora to their Spirit Country. According to lore, ancestral beings are seen within the rock caves and the rugged escarpments that govern every part of Worrora life.

Second Creek Stories and Unravelling History

Walking Country is an important element in Kaurna culture. By adapting this concept will reveal the history of Second Creek as it winds its way from Kensington through Norwood, ending at Twelftree Reserve in Hackney.

The Secret River: Past and Present

This walk explores differing cultural perceptions of the River Torrens contrasting Kaurna beliefs against the story of colonisation and European development.

Led by Uncle Frank Wanganeen and City of Norwood Cultural Heritage Adviser, Denise Schumann.

Coming Back to Country

This tour will explore significant areas along First, Second and Third Creeks from Kensington to St Peters, and the national award-winning Felixstow Reserve. It will interpret Kaurna history against the backdrop of ancient scar trees and ceremonial sites. Led by Aunty Lynette Crocker & Denise Schumann.

Special workshop

Weaving History with Our Hands

Saturday 15 May 2021

Aunty Lynette Crocker will begin with a storytelling session that tells us something of her personal journey and how making baskets and dreaming mats has brought her to a new understanding of the past.

Participants will be taken through the first steps of weaving plant fibres as part of an ancient legacy.
