Cost: $1,400,000

The Second Creek Outfall and Linear Park Path Upgrade compliments a $38.4 million program to upgrade the City’s stormwater drainage network over the next 15 years.

Works for this project include:

  • improved gross pollutant collection
  • safer access for maintenance vehicles to collect debris
  • installation of new 21 metre bridge
  • installation of new 30 metre boardwalk along Linear Park
  • new retaining wall along Linear Park
  • widened path to 3.5 metre along Linear Park
  • native landscaped area off Torrens Road.

Project details

Second Creek runs through the following six suburbs within the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters:

  • St Peters
  • College Park
  • Stepney
  • Norwood
  • Kensington
  • Marryatville.

Second Creek’s stormwater outlet discharges into the River Torrens at St Peters.

The Second Creek Outfall Upgrade includes the upgrade of structures, also known as gross pollutant traps (GPTs), which trap solid waste such as litter and coarse sediment. The upgrade includes the consolidation of infrastructure to create one collection bay and a single access for cleaning.

Existing GPTs, which are located at the outlet of Second Creek and on the River Torrens at St Peters, are used in this program.

Importantly these are the last point of gross pollutant capture along the Torrens River prior to Torrens Lake in the Adelaide CBD.

Background

The Department of Environment and Water (Green Adelaide) in partnership with the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters, have a joint program to improve the quality of urban stormwater discharging into rivers and the sea.

In 2012, a condition assessment and performance review of the GPTs, located at the outlet of Second Creek and on the River Torrens at St Peters, determined that there was a need for ongoing maintenance.

In 2017, this assessment was downgraded and it was determined that there needed to be improved GPT infrastructure.
