Ann Street Zebra Crossing

To improve pedestrian safety and accessibility, a new zebra crossing is proposed for installation on Ann Street, near the rear entrance of The Avenues Shopping Centre, just southeast of Olive Road.
This area is a popular walking route for local residents accessing the shopping centre. However, during peak periods, increased traffic makes it difficult for pedestrians to cross safely.
Improvements include:
- New zebra crossing with pedestrian priority to improve safety and accessibility
- Upgraded street lighting to enhance visibility at the crossing.
To ensure clear sight lines between drivers and pedestrians, nine on-street car parks will need to be removed near the crossing.
Please note: A funding submission for this project will be presented at the Council meeting on 8 October 2025. Once funding is confirmed, the project timeline will be finalised and a commencement date announced.
Background
A Local Area Traffic Management Study undertaken in 2019 recommended that a pedestrian crossing be provided on Ann Street, south of Olive Road, near the shopping centre. Since then, kerb ramps have been installed; however, the Council has continued to receive community concerns regarding pedestrian safety in this location.
In response, the Council investigated the provision of a zebra crossing to improve pedestrian access and safety. This initiative supports the goals of the Council’s CityPlan 2030, specifically objective 1.2, which aims to improve our road network to create a people-friendly, integrated and sustainable transport network.
What is a zebra crossing?
A zebra crossing is a street-level pedestrian crossing marked with white stripes. It gives priority to pedestrians and cyclists, requiring vehicles to give way to anyone using or approaching the crossing.
