A new zebra crossing is being installed on Thornton Street, near the intersection with Regent Street, to improve safety and accessibility for all road users.
The crossing is located close to:
In response to community concerns about pedestrian safety, the Council undertook an investigation at the Thornton Street and Regent Street intersection. The area experiences a high volume of pedestrians, especially in the morning and afternoon peak periods. Based on this, a pedestrian priority zebra crossing was deemed appropriate.
This initiative also supports the goals of the Council’s CityPlan 2030, specifically objective 1.2, which aims to improve the road network by creating a people friendly, integrated and sustainable transport network.
A zebra crossing is a type of pedestrian crossing marked with white stripes on the road. It gives priority to pedestrians and cyclists entering or using the crossing. Drivers must give way to anyone on or approaching the crossing.
To maintain clear sight lines between pedestrians and drivers, six on-street car parks will be removed.
