Young people to reap the rewards from Council’s Sport Buddy Program

Sporting activities included in the Council’s Sport Buddy Program include football, soccer, netball, basketball, swimming, dance, tennis, gymnastics, bouldering, taekwondo, volleyball and more.

Mayor Robert Bria said the Sport Buddy Program provided financial relief, while promoting healthy and active lifestyles for young people in Year 8 to Year 12.

To be eligible for the Sport Buddy Program the young person must not be eligible for the State Government’s Office of Recreation, Sport and Racing Sport Voucher Program which is for students in primary school.

“The cost of sporting and recreation activities can really add up, the Sport Buddy Program is a way for Council to help ease the cost of living pressures,” Mayor Bria said.

“Being active not only keeps young people fit and healthy, but provides all kinds of social, emotional and intellectual benefits,” he said.

“Every young person in the City of Norwood, Payneham & St Peters should have the opportunity to participate in the sport they love.”

Research shows that children doing regular physical activity can have:

• improved emotional wellbeing and health;
• enhanced social skills;
• increased capacity for learning and productivity and;
• a reduction in anti-social behaviour.

The Sport Buddy Program will reimburse eligible young people up to $100 for students up to the age 18, who are living in the Council area.

The Program will help pay for the costs of sport and recreation club registration and associated fees and expenses such as uniforms, equipment and competition entry fees.

All sporting and dance organisations registered for Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing are eligible.
