NPSP welcomes 2023 AFLW fixture featuring two Crows games at Norwood Oval

18/07/2023

The City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters has welcomed two matches at Norwood Oval for the 2023 AFLW season, including the blockbuster opening round on Saturday 2 September between Adelaide and Port Adelaide.

Adelaide will also take on the Western Bulldogs under lights in Round 7 on Friday 13 October.

Mayor Robert Bria said Adelaide’s AFLW side has developed a tradition of playing at Norwood Oval and believes the matches announced yesterday will attract significant crowd numbers.

“The build up to the showdown will be fantastic and promises to be a great contest,” he said

“The match against the Western Bulldogs under lights should also get a good crowd, with plenty of hospitality and entertainment options on The Parade for fans to enjoy before or after the game.”

“Norwood is an historic suburban football oval that is unlike any other SANFL venue and where spectators feel they’re right on top of the action,” he said.

Mayor Bria said the Council, which owns the Oval, has been working alongside Norwood Football Club for years to improve facilities, to secure more AFL and AFLW games on South Australia's Premier Mainstreet.

Norwood Oval recently benefitted from $700,000 in infrastructure improvements for the Gather Round, which included new coaches’ boxes, a new media box and new kiosk under the ET Smith Stand.

Prior to that, the completion of the multi-million-dollar redevelopment of Norwood Oval included the construction of a new two-storey function centre, transforming the venue into one of the premier facilities for football in SA.

The redevelopment also significantly improved facilities for both male and female players and umpires while encouraging increased female participation.

“The new clubrooms and member's facilities have bolstered its appeal, reinforcing it as the ideal place to watch and enjoy the Adelaide Crows AFLW team,” Mayor Bria added.

Mayor Bria said it was for all of these reasons that this year’s Gather Round was a huge success and the reason why the Council is vying to secure more matches at Norwood Oval in 2024.
