The former St Peters Council created the St Peters Historic Conservation Trust in 1996 prior to the amalgamation with the Payneham and Kensington & Norwood Councils to hold and manage items from the Town of St Peters that were considered to be of historical value.
The Trust was gifted most of the historic artifacts of the Council, including portraits of former Mayors and Council Members, historic maps and records, the gold Mayoral Chain, Mayoral and Members robes, and the Council Chamber furniture.
The Trustees have decided that many of these historic items should now be passed to the care of the Cultural Heritage Centre of the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters (NPSP).
Mathew Goode, who is one of the Trustees and a former Mayor of St Peters, said
“The NPSP Council has agreed to take care of most items, notably the historic portraits of successive member of the old St Peters Council. However, as the Council has said that it has no use for most of the historic furniture it has been decided to sell these, along with some artifacts where similar items are already in the Cultural Heritage Centre collection.”
Some of the furniture dates to the 1880s, while other pieces were made by Otto & Co from Queensland Red Cedar trees that once grew in the Avenues of St Peters.
The auction which will be held in the St Peters Town Hall Complex on Saturday 1st November at 11am will be conducted by Thoedore Bruce Auctioneers.
“The proceeds of the auction will be used for projects which relate to the history of the former Town of St Peters, such as the digitisation of old St Peters Council records and the display of retained historic items. This will also be an opportunity for local residents to obtain a piece of St Peters history for their home”, said Mr Goode
