Unsettled presents paint as a material with weight and presence, moving beyond conventional ideas of painting and asserting itself as object in space. By casting, layering, fracturing, and reassembling, Katey Smoker removes paint from the surface, allowing it to exist independently and reveal its behaviour as material form.

The grid and time are central to Smoker’s process. The grid functions as both framework and site of disruption, while extended periods of drying allow the paint to settle and respond. Both become active materials, letting the works hold weight, persist within limitation and create space to consider how material presence unfolds over time.
