Opt-in to Landscape a Verge

The aim of this program is to encourage residents to plant drought tolerant and sustainable plants and shrubs on their verges.

AboutKangaroo paw garden verge

As part of the Council’s Footpath Construction and Reconstruction Program, owners and/or occupiers can “opt-in” to receive verge preparation services for free. This includes excavating the compacted dolomite / quartzite in the verge – adjacent to footpath construction - and replacing it with loam.

What's on offer

The successful applicants will receive the following services for free:

  • excavation of verge to 100mm depth
  • removal of excavated material
  • depositing and spreading loam (soil).

The above services will be completed by the Council by 30 June 2023 at the latest.

Benefits of greening a verge

A well-designed and maintained landscaped verge can:

  • improve your property’s kerb appeal
  • absorb rainwater
  • improve community pride
  • increase local biodiversity
  • reduce urban heat.

Eligibility and conditions

You are eligible to apply for this program if you:

  • received a letter of invitation from the Council
  • agree to plant mainly drought tolerant and sustainable plants and shrubs.

After planting, it will be the applicant's ongoing responsibility to maintain the verge garden in a manner that is safe and tidy. This includes watering, mowing, weeding, pest and disease control, pruning and replacement of material/plants. It also means ensuring that there are no trip hazards for pedestrians and road users.

Exemptions:

  • applicants seeking to plant predominantly non-native lawn/grass are not eligible to apply for this program
  • applicants who have been selected for the Opt-in to Landscape a Verge Program, as part of the Council's annual Capital Works Program, within the last five years are not eligible to apply for this program.

Please note: Applicants not eligible for this program still have the opportunity to gain approval to Landscape a Verge at their own cost. For more information and to apply, visit our Landscape a Verge page.
