The Parade Masterplan supports the retention and enhancement of the unique qualities that define The Parade and cement its status as a cosmopolitan lifestyle destination. The Masterplan defines the infrastructure required to support the increase in density of built form and residents attracted to The Parade and adjacent streets.
The Parade Masterplan identifies the following key elements:
Pedestrian priority, ensuring a safe and comfortable pedestrian environment
Improving quality of lighting for safety and amenity to extend opportunities for activation of the public realm into the evening
A reduction in the speed and volume of traffic by providing wider footpaths and prioritising pedestrians at key intersections where appropriate
Reconfiguration of key intersections as important public spaces that feed off adjacent businesses
Retention of The Parade’s central median with significant tree plantings which is further enhanced with understorey planting and irrigation where possible
Building on and celebrating the unique qualities that define the cosmopolitan character
An active and vibrant streetscape along the length of The Parade initially focussed on the heart area between Osmond Terrace and Queen Street
A varied character to The Parade extending from west to east recognising the various land uses and functions that either exist or will be attracted to The Parade in the future.
Background
With its close proximity to the Adelaide CBD and with further envisaged development in the Norwood area, the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters identified the need to revitalise The Parade to meet the contemporary needs of the community as well as enable it to compete with other main streets and shopping precincts that have or are currently being developed.
The City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters commissioned the preparation of a masterplan for The Parade between Fullarton Road and Portrush Road, including the intersections of side streets that interface with The Parade.
The objective of The Parade Masterplan is to establish a holistic vision that directs the progressive enhancement and redevelopment of the mainstreet precinct to support local businesses, encourage new investment and maximise community enjoyment and to ensure that The Parade retains its strong sense of place and cultural identity whilst meeting the future needs of the community.
The project will include the upgrade of George Street which is set to commence in 2025.
