Major public artwork unveiled – local artist draws from history, nature to create Seed Mix in Old Mill Reserve

02/09/2022

A series of striking sculptures – titled Seed Mix – was last night unveiled in a special ceremony at Old Mill Reserve, Hackney.

The art work was commissioned by the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters as part of its Quadrennial Public Art Program.

Seed Mix – which is located in three different locations in Old Mill Reserve - was designed and created by South Australian artist Nicholas Uhlmann.

The sculptures - Parrot Gumnut, Germinating Wheat Grain and a Golden Wattle Seed – celebrate the history of Old Mill Reserve by weaving contrasting cultures of Kaurna with early colonist grain processing.

Mayor Robert Bria said the Council’s Quadrennial Public Art Program provided incredible opportunities for artists and an indelible cultural experience for residents, visitors and the wider community.

“The City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters is known for its unique and diverse culture and for valuing creativity and artistic expression within the community,” Mayor Bria said.

“The City’s public art walking trail is celebrated for its notable and eminent sculptures such as the stunning Spectrum and the Whirling Mandala, both in Norwood, and Matilda’s Playground, at Stepney. Now, art lovers can also admire the stunning three-part sculpture, Seed Mix, in Hackney.”

“Seed Mix is the Council’s fourth Quadrennial Public Art Commission and further cements our City’s reputation as a growing dynamic and vibrant outdoor visual gallery.”

Artist Nicholas said Seed Mix pays homage to the keystone species that “ties the whole story together and aims to celebrate nature as the star of the Old Mill Reserve experience.”

The Old Mill Reserve is located on the corner of Hackney Road and Richmond Street, Hackney, and forms an entrance to the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters.

Seed Mix was officially unveiled by Mayor Robert Bria and artist Nicholas Uhlmann at Old Mill Reserve, Hackney.
