Walking in our City
Our City is easy to explore on foot, with green open spaces, well‑connected streets and shared‑use paths that make walking enjoyable for everyone.
Whether you are heading out for exercise, a relaxed stroll or a day of discovery, walking is a great way to experience the City.
River Torrens Linear Park Trail
The River Torrens Linear Park Trail is a popular walking route for families and anyone looking to enjoy nature close to home.
The trail follows the River Torrens / Karrawirra Parri through parklands and reserves, offering a mostly flat and accessible path suitable for all ages and abilities.
As you walk, take time to enjoy native plants and keep an eye out for local wildlife, including kookaburras, possums and turtles, with koalas spotted in some areas.
Walk among history and heritage
Many of our suburbs feature attractive, tree‑lined streets and some of Adelaide’s best examples of early, mid and late Victorian architecture. Walking is the perfect way to appreciate the character, charm and history of our neighbourhoods.
You can also explore the City’s past through self‑guided Cultural Heritage Walks, which highlight significant places, local stories and notable residents.
Public art walk
Walking is also a great way to experience the City’s creativity. Our Public Art Walk showcase artworks located in streets, parks and public spaces, adding colour, interest and stories to the local landscape.
From sculptures and murals to interactive and temporary works, public art reflects the City’s culture, history and community identity. The walks can be enjoyed at your own pace and are suitable for all ages, making them an easy addition to a casual stroll or longer walk.
Walk, shop and dine
Walking makes it easy to enjoy nearby shopping, dining and entertainment precincts. Adelaide’s vibrant East End and popular local destinations such as The Parade, Magill Road, Kent Town and Payneham Road are all within comfortable walking distance of one another, allowing you to combine exercise with cafés, restaurants and retail experiences.
Walk with others
If you enjoy walking with company, Heart Foundation Walking groups are a great way to meet new people and look after your health.
Beginners are welcome and it's free. Before you join a group, contact a walk organiser for further information.
