A smart city leverages new technology, data and innovation to improve liveability, productivity and sustainability outcomes.

Annual progress updates

In addition to projects managed by the Smart Cities Steering Group, the Council has completed a number of projects that align with actions in the Smart City Plan.

Smart City Progress

  • Thermal Imaging Cameras

    Completed

    Deployment of thermal imaging cameras available through the Council Library borrowing inventory including instructions to enable citizens to undertake “energy audits” of their households and make changes to save energy.

  • Ride Share options

    Completed

    Hosting of Flexi-Car share cars in publicly accessible locations in Norwood and Kent Town, with other locations still under investigation.

  • Smart Irrigation

    Completed

    Additional 21 Hydrawise System irrigation controllers installed, completing the deployment of Smart Irrigation at all Council owned and managed Reserves.

  • Low-emission Council vehicles

    Completed

    Transitioned the Council’s fleet to low-emission vehicles.

  • Smart parking pilot

    Completed

    Partnered with eSMART 21 to undertake a Smart Parking Pilot Project in the ground level of the Webbe Street car park (used technology to monitor 6 car parking bays).

  • Online development applications

    Completed

    Transitioned to electronic assessment of development applications via the State Planning Portal.

  • Free public Wi-Fi at Norwood Town Hall

    Completed

    Access to free public Wi-Fi for Norwood Town Hall visitors.

  • Six electric vehicle charging stations

    Completed

    Received approval for the installation of six electric vehicle charging stations.

  • Norwood Town Hall goes solar

    Completed

    Solar panels installed at Norwood Town Hall.

  • Smart koala crossing

    Completed

    Koala Crossing with remote monitoring capabilities installed on William Street, Norwood.

The Council's Smart City Plan was published in January 2021.
